Mainspring Expands to the United States

Mainspring Agency sets up US based sister company

We have spent the better part of a decade telling stories for people who are trying to change something. Researchers working at the edge of what we know. Universities making the case for why their work matters. Organizations tackling problems that do not fit neatly into a thirty second ad. Today we are taking a step that lets us do more of that work, closer to the people who need it, by establishing a United States presence through our new entity, Mainspring Media US Inc.

This is not a pivot. It is an expansion of something we already do well, into a market where the appetite for it runs deeper than anywhere we have worked before.

Why We Are Expanding Into the US Market

If you have followed Mainspring for a while, you know that some of the work we are proudest of has been science storytelling: Documentaries about sea level rise, films about coastal communities facing an uncertain future, environmental storytelling for US nonprofits. A lot of that work has been done in partnership with American universities and research programs, including projects funded by the National Science Foundation.

There is a simple reason we are leaning further into the United States. The scale of research funding, philanthropy, and institutional communication south of the border is in a different league. American universities, research institutions, and science-focused nonprofits invest in telling their stories in a way that creates real, sustained demand for the kind of video production we specialize in. We have felt that pull for years. Setting up a US entity is us finally answering it properly, rather than treating American work as the occasional project that happens to come our way.

What Mainspring Media US Inc. Focuses On

We are not arriving in the US as a generalist video production company competing on volume. We are arriving as specialists.

Mainspring Media US Inc. concentrates on the work we do better than almost anyone: science communication video production, documentary filmmaking, and branded content for research institutions, universities, and mission-driven organizations. That focus is deliberate. When your subject is complex, whether it is climate science, public health, engineering, or fundamental research, you do not just need someone who can point a camera. You need a team that can sit with difficult ideas, find the human thread inside them, and turn them into something an audience actually wants to watch.

That is the discipline we have built Mainspring around, and it is the discipline the US entity will carry forward.

Science Storytelling for Research Institutions

Research communication has a particular challenge at its heart. The work is often genuinely important and almost never self-explanatory. A grant report does not move a donor. A journal citation does not inspire a prospective student. A press release rarely survives contact with a distracted audience.

Video does something those formats cannot. It gives the researcher a face and a voice. It shows the coastline that is disappearing rather than describing it. It lets the viewer feel the stakes before they understand the science. For universities and research institutions trying to make the case for their work, whether to funders, policymakers, students, or the public, that emotional throughline is often the difference between a message that lands and one that evaporates.

This is the space Mainspring has worked in for years, and it is the space our US operation is built to serve.

Working With Universities and NSF-Funded Programs

A good deal of our existing US work sits inside the university and federal research ecosystem. We have produced documentary and testimonial work in partnership with American universities, and we have worked on NSF-funded projects where the goal was not promotion but genuine public communication of research.

That experience matters, because working with research institutions is its own craft. The timelines are long. The subject matter is technical. The people in front of the camera are often experts first and communicators second, and getting a natural, compelling performance out of a scientist who would rather be in the lab is a skill you only develop by doing it many times over. Grant-funded work also comes with expectations around rigor, accuracy, and accountability that a typical brand shoot never touches.

We know that world. Building a US entity lets us serve it with the local footing and dedicated focus it deserves.

How We Work Across Borders

Practically, here is what the expansion looks like. Mainspring Media US Inc. is a US company serving US and international clients. Projects are managed end to end with the same team and the same standards you already know, and we engage skilled local crews across the United States to handle production wherever a shoot takes us. That model lets us scale into new cities and states without compromising on the quality of the people behind the camera.

For clients, the experience is simpler, not more complicated. You work with a US entity, you are invoiced in US dollars, and you get a partner who has spent years learning how to tell exactly the kind of story you are trying to tell.

What Comes Next

This is the beginning of a longer build. Over the coming months we will be deepening our relationships with universities, research communications teams, and science-focused organizations across the United States, and continuing to produce the documentary and branded work that got us here.

If you work at a university, a research institution, or an organization doing science-driven work, and you have a story that is not landing the way it should, we would like to hear about it. That is the work we came to do.
